On 17th May 2013 the group was officially notified that it had been confirmed as a recipient of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2013. The attached citation stated that it was for “Providing advice, support and social activities for people who suffer from long term health conditions”. The official letter of congratulation arrived on 2nd June.
On 17th September 102 people arrived to help the group celebrate the presentation of the Award. This included partners of the group members, the many professionals, sponsors and volunteers who have helped the group and members of the Liskerrett Centre staff who have provided much support for the group over the years.
The Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho, then arrived for the presentation of the Award to the group. He started by congratulating the group on its achievement and said that such awards were not given lightly. He then read out the citation which his team had sent up to Buckingham Palace as their recommendation that the group should receive the award, followed by a reading of the certificate that accompanies the award. He then presented the trophy to the group, which was accepted by David Cogger, the oldest member of the group. It was originally intended that the trophy would be accepted by Bob Trevethan, one of the group’s original members, but unfortunately he was not well enough to attend. The Lord Lieutenant then presented the certificate to the group, which was accepted by Maureen Lyons.
Following the presentation the group and its guests celebrated with champagne and a buffet, which was provided by the Liskerrett Centre’s Hub café.
